The Devil

appetite unleashed what you chase because it burns power tasted as poison the bargain you made

The Devil is not evil—it's appetite made conscious. He represents the part of you that wants, that hungers, that chases sensation and power regardless of consequences. In the Devil, you are enslaved not by chains but by your own desire for what the chains promise.

Upright

You're caught in a loop because something in it actually works for you. You get something from this pattern, this person, this situation—maybe power, maybe pleasure, maybe just the dark familiarity of it. The Devil isn't an external force; it's the appetite in you. The cards are asking: what are you actually getting from this? And is it worth what it's costing?

Reversed

You're either recognizing the loop and finding the will to step out, or you're being victimized by someone else's appetites while pretending you have no choice. One of these is true. Which one?

The Devil: Love & Relationships

The Devil in love points to a bond that feels inescapable — codependency, obsession, a dynamic where one or both people is staying out of fear rather than genuine choice. The chains in the Devil card are famously loose: both figures can step out of them. They stay because they believe they can't leave. If this relationship is your Devil card, the question isn't whether you're trapped — it's whether you're willing to test whether the chains are real.

The Devil: Career & Work

In career, The Devil points to feeling trapped in a situation — a job you hate but won't leave, a career path that pays but costs you, an ambition that's starting to define you in ways you don't like. This card also shows up around materialism driving decisions that should be driven by something else. The golden handcuffs are still handcuffs. What would you do if money wasn't the reason?

The Devil: Yes or No

No — or at minimum, not for the reasons you're doing it. The Devil asks you to be honest about what's actually driving this decision. If the answer is fear, habit, or addiction to a pattern rather than genuine desire, the answer is no. Free yourself from the framing first, then ask the question again.
